Title:
Deciding On A Top Level Domain
Article:
Okay. So you have selected a domain name for yourself and by an amazing turn of luck, it is still available for registration. The next step is deciding on what the top-level domain (TLD) will be. The TLD is the extension that comes after the period in the name of your domain. For example, 'com', 'net', and 'org' are the most common in the United States. Deciding on what TLD that your domain will take, can be just as important as deciding on the name of your domain.
To help distinguish between top-level domains, here are descriptions for ones in use today:
.com
- (commercial) By far the most common and popular top-level domain. Mainly intended for use by commercial organizations, today anyone can have this TLD. The trick is to come up with a domain name with this TLD that hasn't already been registered.
.net
- (network) Regarded as the second most popular top-level domain. This TLD refers to networks connected to the internet. You find this most common for Internet Service Providers (ISP's).
.edu
- (education) This is designated for schools and universities.
.gov
- (government) In use by various government agencies.
.org
- (organization) In general, this extension is for noncommercial and non-profit organizations.
.mil
- (military) Mainly used by military organizations.
.biz
- (business) Designed to be an alternative to the .com extension.
.info
- (information) This is a relatively new TLD and is available to anyone for business, government and noncommercial use.
.name
- (name) Now people can use their own names as a top-level domain. It would something like this - lastname.firstname.name
