Title:
A Look At PHP
Article:
What is PHP?
According to PHP.net, PHP is an HTML-embedded scripting language. Much of its syntax is borrowed from C, Java and Perl with a couple of unique PHP-specific features thrown in. The goal of the language is to allow web developers to write dynamically generated pages quickly.
History of PHP
In 1994, PHP had it's beginnings as a small hack designed to be a tool for web designers. A consultant from a Toronto-based firm named Rasmus Lerdorf developed this program enabling web designers to write a macro inside static HTML code.
Then in 1997, PHP became a programming language when two Israeli programmers rewrote the core engine to take it to the next level of programming. Today, over 5 million web sites have been created with PHP and the number is still growing.
Strength of PHP
It's strongest advantage is that it is an open source program. This means the source code is available to any and every one. This will enable more bugs and errors to be found and fixed due to the larger number of programmers able to access the source code. With this larger community of programmers, newer and better versions will be available much sooner than compared to a proprietary company developing it on it's own.
Weakness of PHP
Relatively speaking, PHP is still in it's infancy compared to other programming languages out there. So it is bound to meet with some obstacles as it grows and finds it's place in the programming language community.
