Title:
Different Flavors of Web Hosting
Article:
These days, web hosting companies are offering many different varieties of hosting options to best meet the needs of their current and potential clients. Some people just want to share their favorite hobby with others and only require a small amount of web space and minimal amounts of bandwidth. Others are preparing to do business online and demand large amounts of space and break neck data transfers for their web sites. Whatever your needs are for your web site, you most likely fall into one of three different types of hosting: Virtual, dedicated, and collocation.
Virtual hosting, or shared hosting, is by far the most common and most affordable form of web hosting for the majority of web site owners. In general, virtual hosting works by having multiple users share the resources of a server. So disk space, memory, bandwidth, and any other resources are available to all users on the server. In practice, having people share server space allows the cost of the server to be shared among everyone to keep individual pricing lower than if an individual had to pay for the whole server on their own. This brings us to the next type of hosting, which is dedicated hosting.
Dedicated hosting is mainly intended for small to medium businesses or individuals with a lot of money to spend. This type of hosting means that you get the whole server to use for yourself. Sharing doesnt occur because there is no one to share it with and all of its resources are available at your discretion. Please note that, in most cases, you are not actually buying the server but just leasing it from the web hosting company.
Finally, there is the collocation hosting. Medium to large businesses or individuals who have just won the lottery can consider this type of hosting. In collocation hosting, you actually own the server instead of just leasing it. The only thing is, typically, you dont own the location that your server is located at. So your server shares physical space with servers owned by other people.
In the end, which type of hosting you need, will depend on how big your site is and how much traffic you plan to receive to your site. Rest assured that no matter what kind of site that you create, there is a web hosting option available to you.
