Title:
Understanding Basic Elements of Web Hosting
Article:
For new web site owners, it can be a daunting task to get their web site on the Web. So many different things to discypher like bandwidth, domain names, IP address, DNS servers, and the list goes on and on. Sometimes those beginner sites are not beginner enough or you need a definition for the definition of the word you just looked up. It is true that there is a learning curve to dealing with web technology but once the initial stages are over it really becomes easy to get setup on the Web.

To start off, it is a good idea to explore some the more common terms that will most will come across when getting started on the Web.

Web Host: Web hosts are companies that provide a place for you to store your web site. They function as the store front where people can come and see your web site. Most companies today will provide many tools to help you maintain your web site and sometimes improve it.

Disk Space: This refers to the amount of space that is available for storage on a web hosting server. This is the same term to describe the hard drive disk space in your personal computer at home. These days disk space is measured in megabytes(MB) and gigabytes(GB).

Domain Name: This is the identifier used to represent your web site address. For example www.widgetexpress.com would be the domain name for a web site for some company named Widgetexpress.

SQL: This stands for Structured Query Language. This is a programming language that works with databases. One of the more popular software packages is MySQL.

HTTP: This stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol. This is the most common protocol found on the Web. How a computer will talk with another computer is determined by its protocol. Another type of protocol is the File Transfer Protocol or simply FTP.

URL: This stands for the Uniform Resource Locator: It is most similar to an mailing address where it contains who it is going to and then the location from general to specific. The URL works in the same way. A URL might look like this: http://www.widgetexpress.com/homepage.html. It is comprised of the protocol, domain name, and the page you want.

HTML: This stands for HyperText Markup Language. HTML is the most basic programming language for writing and creating web sites. It is not necessary to know how to use HTML but because of its simplicity and the fact that many tools use it, HTML is a good way to get a basic foundation of designing web sites.

Of course, this is no where near a comprehensive list of terms but it should be enough to get most novice web challenged people started.
