Title:
Overview of Alexa ranking system
Article:
There is a system of ranking web sites that still may not be known by the general online community called the Alexa ranking system by Alexa.com. Alexa.com is a subsidiary of Amazon.com whose prime directive is to improve web navigation through people using alexa. Alexa is a powerful tool for determining the traffic received by a given web site in relation to the rest of Web. In addition to the ranking system, Alexa.com offers different data services and web authoring services to help web site owners and managers improve their sites and, in turn, improving the overall World Wide Web.
There are two basic ways to access this ranking system. First, anyone can go to Alexa.com and enter a web site that they would like to learn about. The more popular way is to install the alexa toolbar for your web browser. With this toolbar, any time that you visit a web site, the ranking of the site will appear. Then by clicking on the rank number, you will be redirected to alexa.com with all the information for the web site selected. The toolbar also is how alexa ranks sites.
In a given day, alexa will record what web sites you have visited and cast a vote for that site. It doesnt matter how many times you visit a web site in that day. Only one vote will be cast. In addition, alexa keeps track of how many pages you visited on the web site. So the total number of visits that day to a web site and the number of pages visited gets calculated with the past three months worth of numbers to determine the rank for the web site. The ranking is from 1 to the total number of sites with the lowest number representing the most heavily visited site.
One of the benefits to the alexa ranking system is that it counts the past three months in its calculations for ranking. This gives a stable and realistic evaluation of the traffic to a web site. Using three months of numbers means there is less chance of manipulation or abnormal peaks in page visits. It is important to note that alexa only ranks sites that have been visited by people using the alexa toolbar. So potentially, there are web sites that have thousands of visits a day but not ranked because not one visitor had an alexa toolbar. It could work the other way as well. A web site might only have one visitor a day but because that one visitor was using the toolbar, the web site got ranked (albeit probably ranked very low).
As mentioned earlier, Alexa.com does offer many other services and tools. But what it is known for is the ranking system. So the next time you check out a web site claiming to be the most visited web site, you will know where to go for the truth.
