We have an almost instantaneous mail service that allows us to send documents, files, pictures, and a slew of other computer objects. But unlike hand written letters or physical mail, which allows us to go anywhere and be anywhere to write mail, we are most often confined to the computer that our email service is setup with in order to write our emails. Email works by having an email account configured for your computer. The computer must then be setup with the settings of your email server. In order to send email from different computers, we would have to configure each computer that we wish to send our email on. It might be okay for some that have multiple computers or even a laptop to configure their email service but what if you travel and dont have your own computer with you? Webmail is the answer.

Webmail works by having the email program reside on the server where your email account located on and not on your own computer. So to send, view, or receive email, you just have to log on to your email account from your web browser. The perfect examples of webmail are the free email services offered like Hotmail, Yahoo, and Google. You can access your email from any computer with online access and from anywhere in the world.

Webmail is another example of how our society is becoming truly an online community. We are no longer being limited to our own computers for email but now the entire Web is open for us to access our email.
