Title:
CGI and Perl In a Nutshell
Article:
CGI is short for Common Gateway Interface. It is used extensively in web hosting and in web authoring. But there is a misconception that CGI is a programming language when it technically isnt. CGI acts as a bridge to allow programs to be run on a website.
The basic idea is that when script is accessed on the website it uses CGI to take the information and pass it to a program on the computer. The main purpose of CGI is to be the common language for programs to communicate with websites.
Probably the most used programming language that utilizes CGI is Perl. Perl is a high level language useful for different operations such as file manipulation and system operations. A very useful and well-known Perl script for websites is formmail. What this script does is take information that is put into a website by a visitor and emails the information. The information is typically sent to the website owner. A good example would be an order form. All the details filled in go to someone to fill the order.
Perl is a very powerful programming language and a useful tool in website authoring. Whether ASP, PHP, Python, or any other language is your language of choice, Perl is definitely not to be overlooked.
