Title:
Web Page File Extensions
Article:
Back in the early days of the World Wide Web, you may have noticed that most web pages were written in HTML and therefore had the file extension .html or .htm. Today, there are so many tools and programming languages for web pages that you may not recognize the extension anymore. Nowadays, there are web pages being written in PHP, C, Python or using interfaces like CGI. All these different extensions do have a purpose and meaning.
When you interact with a web page the file extension of the page you are looking for will determine the behavior of the page. For HTML, a request for thisl page will just show you the page as is on your web browser. Today, many web servers are running all sorts of scripts and programs even before a web page is requested.
Some of the more common extensions:
.html still the standard for web pages. HTML is HyperText Markup Language.
.cgi known as Common Gateway Interface. Acts as a common communication medium between a program and a variety of languages.
.asp ASP is short for Active Server Pages. This is a scripting language best suited for Microsoft servers.
.pl perl extension that calls the appropriate script.
.php known as Hypertext Preprocessor Langauge (dont ask how this is the same as php) another scripting language for web sites.
