When email first came on the scene, it was an amazing thing. People all over the world could send correspondence with each other without having to wait days for the message to arrive. It truly changed how people communicated with each other. Did we ever think that there could be anything faster than email? Somebody must have because now we have instant messenger.
Instant messenger is an amazing program that allows people to be connected online and communicate - live. With email you were never sure when someone might get your message but now the message is truly instantaneous. Groups of friends, business partners, and family living far away can all join in at the same time to have chats with one another.
Many features of IM (as it is more commonly known) make it a very attractive program. Anyone that is part of your contact list with IM can have instant access to you when you are online. Its better than a phone call because you dont have to dial a phone number and wait for them to pick up. In IM, you are alerted that some one has come online and an icon of the person tells you who it is and messaging can begin. The status of each person can be altered to fit the situation. So if someone leaves the computer you can set the IM to indicate that. These days the different options can even be customized.
Some might say that this type of communication is still very impersonal. That may or may not be true, but with emotional icons (emoticons) people can get a sense for what you are implying in your conversation. These emoticons can even be animated to create an even more accurate sense of the persons feels and intent. If you want to give someone a raspberry there is an emoticon that can simulate the tongue and sound of it.
With this technology, people are being connected in ways that was never possible before. More and more we see the signs that the world is truly becoming an online community.
