Title:
Turning Computers Into Servers
Article:
A server is a computer but not all computers make a good a server. A server has all the basic parts that a computer has. Both have a hard drive(s), cpu(s), memory, and the other essentials. So what makes a computer become a server? Well, not much. A server is just a computer that works for other computers. So if you have computers set up in this fashion, then congratulations, you have a server. In the web hosting industry, the server is a computer that servers the web pages requested from a computer. Typically, it will be through a web browser.

In web hosting, a web server is designed to provide for the needs of the websites that are located on it. There arent many extras with the server since it is designed for only one specific purpose. Also, it can be fully automated taking care of most functions on its own. The only thing that would require human interface is for maintenance and fixing any problems that come up.

Again, any computer can be turned into a server but that doesnt mean that it will be a good one. One area of difference is in redundancy. Home computers typically have only one hard drive that stores all the necessary files. Servers will have multiple hard drives with copies of the data contained in the main drive. A common server disk system is a RAID. This is where multiple hard drives are linked together and when one drive fails the others take its place.

It is interesting to note that most web servers are not state of the art. But that doesnt mean that they are obsolete either. The most important aspect of a web server is that it has to be reliable. When any new technology comes out there are bound to be some bugs and things that need to be worked out first. So many web hosting providers will choose to stay with equipment and software that has thoroughly been proven out in the market.

Another example is when it comes to processors. Celeron chips are still popular because they dont produce as much heat as the full Pentium processors and because web hosting doesnt really require a lot of processing power. Sometimes it is true that less is more.

So even though any computer can become a server, it is not always how much you have but do you have the right stuff in your computer to be a server?
