Title:
To Graphic or Not to Graphic
Article:
Technology continues to advance in many areas and web design continues to benefit from them.
High speed web access has brought about greater capacity for size and depth of web pages. Content could include but not limited to pictures, sound files, and videos all to enhance the web experience.
As such, graphic design has become an important part of web site development. Many people return to web sites because of the attractiveness of the graphics used on the web site. But sometimes graphics can be a detriment. Often, web site visitors leave because the graphics were too large and took too long to load onto their web browser. They might have the most beautiful graphics in the world but unless people can see them they become useless. Visitors often give up in frustration waiting for large images to load. So keep in mind that the graphics included in a web page doesnt necessarily guarantee a successful web site.
It may be a good idea to create two or more versions of your website to accommodate the wide ranging online community of people. Just as there are many who have taken advantage of the high speed access available today in Broadband or DSL, there are still those that are limited to dial up access. So creating multiple pages based on speed customizes the web experience for each person. You could give the option for a low speed connection or a high speed connection. The person would then choose the connection type that they are most likely to match.
When doing graphic design for a web site, another way to keep an efficient web site is to keep the size of the graphics to a minimum. Basically, by making the images smaller the time it takes to be loaded onto a web browser will be faster. This will make it possible for all visitors to see the images right away.
The color range in images can also have an effect in the speed of downloading web sites. Making graphics use 8-bit or 16-bit rather than 24 or 32-bit can make web sites easier to download. It is also a good idea to keep graphics to the standard JPEG and GIF files. This is not so much because they are smaller file types but they are common image types on web sites today so sticking with them will ensure that they can be viewed on all browsers.
Finally, a good rule to follow is to keep web page sizes to around 20K. This is small enough to have quick download times and large enough for content. Just remember that when it comes to graphic design for web pages, bigger doesnt always mean better.
