Sitemaps act as an overview to see how everything is organized and to find a specific content point.
Having hyperlinks allows search engine robots to index and gather information about the web site and its content. As the robot works its way through the web pages it keeps track of relevant content and the depth of the pages. This helps in ranking the web site higher in the search engine. It is a good idea to make all available web pages linked together so that the robot will have an accurate index of the entire web site.
Obviously visitors to the web site will not be like a search engine robot. People who come to your site will more than likely not care how many links you have but will want to know what are the contents of the link and if it is important to them. Links provide a natural and flowing way to navigate the content of the site.
As for sitemaps, it is an invaluable way to catalog the content of a web site. It puts all the pages of a web site into an easy to follow format, which can lead visitors to exactly where they want to go. Also, it gives a good overview of what exactly is contained in all the web pages. When considering sitemaps for search engines, it gives the robot a place where every web page on the site is indexed.
The main purpose of creating a sitemap is to allow instant link to every single page of the web site. Visitors will be able to go directly to the page they want. Even though sitemaps can be created in any number of ways it is a good idea to add a brief description for links. Even a web site can contain thousands of pages, descriptions can save time by not having to visit each page to find out what kind of content it contains.
In conclusion, both hyperlinks and sitemaps provide benefit to not only the web site ranking position but also visitors and viewers of the site. It is always a good thing when much can be accomplished from a little.
