Title:
Database Hosting In A Nutshell
Article:
There are many types of web sites today that require the use of a database. Any sites that have a plethora of dynamic content are top choices for databases. Many of the sites that allow some sort of searching like browsing through an online catalog are good candidates for databases, as well. In a nutshell, any site that needs to store large volumes of information is a good candidate for a database. Databases are a good way to quickly update and access large volumes of information on a web site.

There are two options available for database storage. Both depend on the size of the database that will be needed. For large databases, it may be necessary to find a separate dedicated database server. How much system resources a database will need will determine whether a dedicated server is needed. Servers that are designed to handle the complex database applications have much more system resources to handle the tremendous load. They will often have anywhere from four to five times more RAM than typical web servers for database access. The reason is the simple fact that it is much faster to work, or in this case search databases, in RAM than from a hard drive. To get some perspective, Google.com has over 3 trillion web sites in its database yet is able to do searches in less than a second.

For databases that are relatively small, it may be possible to have the database and the web site on the same server and not have a separate server for each. As mentioned before, when to consider if a separate database server is necessary should be determined by the size of the database and the amount of traffic to the site.

How fast the Internet connection to the database also is a factor to consider. A company with high traffic will need a connection to suit the needs at the time as well as grow as the company grows. Most companies that fit this description will more than likely have its own servers. This allows greater control of the system and faster access to make changes such as upgrades.

Overseeing the maintenance of a dedicated database server is critical and must be done constantly. Since web hosting has a myriad of option for how the hosting will be done, (i.e. reseller, managed, dedicated) it is important to be clear about how the web servers will be serviced.
