Title:
Virtual Private Servers 101
Article:
A growing technology in the web industry today is the virtual private server. Virtual private servers have combined strengths of dedicated servers and shared servers. They have the control and security features characteristic of dedicated servers combines with the low cost benefits of a shared server. There may be some confusion of virtual private servers with virtual hosting but these are definitely two entirely different concepts.
In virtual hosting, the system administrator maintains the control over the entire system and both the physical server and its applications are in use by all. In virtual private servers the physical server at the root is divided into partitions (much like when a hard disk is partitioned to make two or more virtual hard drives). By partitioning at the root, each partition becomes a virtual dedicated server. Each partition then has complete control over the software apps it uses and system administrator software controls.
The overall physical server of a virtual server is still maintained by the server administrator but, again, the administrator of each partition does the software administration. Things like FTP, POP, IMAP and SMTP gateways and other dedicated server tools are available in virtual private servers but at no where near the cost of having a dedicated physical server.
