Online Scams to Watch Out For
Article:
There are ton of online scams being done all over the world because of the reach that the Web provides. Education about these scams is essential in spotting them before it becomes a lesson the hard way. But with the help of companies wanting consumer awareness, people are becoming more and more aware of the scams out there and what to do about them. The following are some the more popular scams you might see.

There is a scam called phishing where scammers will send email disguised as email from popular web sites such as ebay, pay pal, or American Express with the hope that you had an account or currently have an account with them. The email looks official and even has little details to make us believe it is legitimate. What this email does is notify you of potential identity theft to your account. They ask that you go to the link they provide in the email and confirm your personal information. The email goes on to say that if account information is not updated that the account will be closed. By following the directions of the fake email, you are potentially giving away your identity to be used to open other credit card accounts and maybe even worse things.

With the growing popularity of online auctions, there have been many people getting burned by scammers. There are so many different ways that you can get taken advantage of through these sites. You can win a bid on a product and never receive the product after already sending in money. The product you do receive is not the item that was promised or is a counterfeit. The best protection is to be smart about participating in online auctions. For example, if a $2000 Rolex is going for $200, red flags should be going up.

An amazingly large number of people are falling for the, youve won something for nothing emails. These are quick ways to entice people to provide credit card numbers. They ask a credit card number to pay for the shipping and then the prize is sent. In the end, nothing gets sent to you except credit card bills for items you never purchased.

Another popular scam is one similar to the work at home/envelope stuffing scam. It works by having a company without a U.S. address or bank account ship goods to your address and then in turn you ship them to overseas locations. They may require wire transfers be made available to your personal account and then you receive a percentage of the cost of the goods transferred.

What people arent aware of is that the goods are bought with stolen credit cards. The goods are then shipped elsewhere to be sold by you. So now not only are you vulnerable to having your bank account emptied, you are involved in the crime.

The number of online scams seems to grow at an impressive rate. Email boxes are filled with promises of quick get rich schemes, pyramid schemes, free products, and discounts on medicine. You name it and theres probably a scam for it. The key to avoiding these scams is to use your head. The old saying If the offer is too good to be true than it usually is still applies to online consumers as much as it does to every other area of product consumption.
