Yahoo.com is by far the most popular web site, let alone the most popular search engine, today. A vast majority of web traffic originates from this search engine. Submitting your web site to Yahoo is a good place to get listed. The negative is that it could take several months after you submit your site for it to be listed. There are still a ton of other directories and search engines that you can get listed on. It is important to select categories that your web site best fits in that will determine the best directories that your web site will be placed in.
Local exposure
If you have a brick and mortar business, look for web sites of other local businesses and directories. The more places that you get listed on, the more exposure you will have. Most local web sites will not charge for listings but some may. But it is usually just a minimal fee.
Exchanging links
Find web sites that will exchange their link with yours. Not everyone will want to but if you are willing to link their site they will probably be more willing to link yours. When finding web sites to exchange links with, remember to find links to sites that are not in direct competition with you. If you are a web hosting provider, for example, you dont want to be linking with another web hosting provider and potentially sending people their way. Look for web sites that are complimentary to your site. So if your business is real estate then you might want to link with banks and mortgage lenders, home improvement sites, or contractors. Exchanging links can be a mutually beneficial method of marketing.
Banner advertisements
Some marketing techniques require some financing in order to get it going. Web sites usually have a setup fee for banner advertisements to be put on their sites. It might be prudent to have a budget for marketing expenses. There are many ways and places to promote banners but most will require some cost.
Before you can begin to find sites, you will need to have a banner to display. The ideal banner size should be 468X60 pixels. If you dont have experience in creating banners, there are professional companies that will take care of it for you. After that, you can begin to find potential web sites to place your banner on. Again, it is important that you stick with web sites in your industry. It would be pointless to advertise in a directory about deep sea fishing when your business deals with computer software games. The key is to know who your target audience is.
Referrals and recommendations
Just as referrals are a great way to bring new business in from friends and families of current clients this technique also works on the Web. Going to forums and newsgroups to spread the word about your web site and having clients receive discounts for recommending friends to your business is a cheap way to market. It has been proven for many storefront businesses and it can work in online storefronts as well.
Emails
This can be tricky as the line between spamming and legitimate emails is a fine line. Stay with friends and families to email to. If you already have a mailing list of clients, stick to that for marketing by email. Make sure that your emails have some sort of reference lines at the end. Things to include in addition to the basic name, address, and email address would be things like web site, name of business, and some sort of catchy slogan about your site. The thing to remember is not to take email addresses from other web sites for the purpose of emailing them. Then the fine line has been crossed.
