It is important to select categories that your web site best fits in that will determine the best directories that your web site will be placed in.

If you have a brick and mortar business, look for web sites of other local businesses and directories. The more places that you get listed on, the more exposure you will have. Most local web sites will not charge for listings but some may. But it is usually just a minimal fee.

Exchanging links

Find web sites that will exchange their link with yours. Not everyone will want to but if you are willing to link their site they will probably be more willing to link yours. This can be tricky as the line between spamming and legitimate emails is a fine line. Stay with friends and families to email to.
