* If at all possible, the name of your business should be the same as the domain name. So if your company name is Graphic Hosting Solutions Unlimited. www.GHSU.com may make it difficult for people to associate it or remember the name of the company.
* Stay away from making your domain name similar to the names of popular web sites such as Amazon or Ebay. There is a potential that a legal battle will ensue over trademarks and infringement.
* Creating a new word for your domain like other name brand companies (i.e. Kleenex, Band-Aid, or Coke) and trying to make it a household word is a good idea but could cost millions of dollars in marketing and advertising. Also, people may not remember it anyway.
* If the name of your business started out as brick and mortar, dont assume that it will be just as successful as an online business.
* Avoid names that could be considered both plural and singular. For example, if a business already exists as www.floridaorange.com and you are www.floridaoranges.com it could confuse people and send them to the wrong site.
* Stay away from hyphenated words. This could get confusing for some people trying to remember where the dash goes in the name. www.mybusinessonlinenews.com is easier to remember than www.my-business-online-news.com.
