Title:
Dont Let Emails To Your Site Get the Best of You
Article:
Spam, junk email, viruses, these are all problems that everyone with an email address must beware of on a daily basis but especially if you have a domain. It is possible that out of a hundred emails you receive, 10 may be business related and legitimate emails that you trust. The other 90 are unsolicited or just plain junk. There are some things you can do to protect yourself and reduce both the headache and list of unsolicited emails coming to your domain.
Configuring your mail server
Setting the default email account of your domain, to not accept default email, can drastically reduce junk mail. So when an email is sent without specifying a certain mailbox, it will not be accepted. This could eliminate up to 80% of unwanted email.
Check mailboxes regularly
Junk email and spam left unchecked could take up and overflow the disk space limit of your domain. This can cause your mail service to stop receiving emails that might be important or legitimate. Be sure to check the all the mailboxes at the server.
Avoid duplicate emails
If you decide to have email forwarded outside of the domain, it may be a good idea to have your mail server not store email on the server. Otherwise, this may cause duplicate emails to be created.
Install a server-side spam filter tool
This is a very effective way to effectively reduce junk emails. Many web hosting providers offer this as part of the hosting plan. Ask your web hosting services provider what kind of server-side spam tools they offer.
Install a server-side anti-virus protection
Where spam is mostly just a nuisance, viruses can truly be deadly. Having virus protection software in place is not just a recommendation but should be a requirement for your domain. Web hosting providers should have options for what kind of virus protection they offer.
Secure socket layer encryption protocol
Use this to download emails so that no one can intercept your emails while downloading. This should be set up through the services that the web host provides.
Set up reminders of when the disk limit is being reached
This is important because if the disk space limit is exceeded then the server will no longer receive email. Reminders are a good way to stay within limits and continue to receive legitimate emails.
Use forms over email links
By setting up a form for people to contact you, robots used to gather email addresses will be unable to get yours and add them to junk email lists.
In the end, the best deterrent to avoiding junk email is not give it out to unknown or untrusted web sites. Especially those that promise something for free.
