File transfer protocol, more commonly referred to as FTP, is a protocol that allows files to transferred from one computer to another. These days, the most common usage of this protocol is for web pages to be uploaded to the web host server where the web site is contained.

Requirement for FTP
If you are not already set up for FTP, there is software available to get you started. One of the most popular free FTP programs is FTP explorer. This free FTP is available at www.ftpx.com.

Connecting with FTP
Below shows how to connect to an FTP server using FTP Explorer:

1) If FTP explorer is not already open, go ahead and open it. Click on the connect button on the toolbar or select connect from the Tools menu.

2) In the Profile Name text, enter a name to give the FTP connection.

3) In the Host Address text box enter the address of the desired server connecting to.

4) Enter the port number of where the connection will be made.

5) Check the use PASV option, which doesnt allow external FTP connections.

6) Check the use firewall option if your computer is behind a firewall.

7) At this point you can either enter a name for the FTP login or the anonymous option, if allowed.

8) To establish the connection with the server click on the connect button.

Uploading files using FTP
After establishing a connection with the server, you can send or upload the files you want to the server. First, locate the destination of the uploaded files. In the Tools menu select the upload button. Next, select the file(s) that you want to upload and click open. An alternative method is to just drag and drop the files that you want.

Downloading files using FTP
First, follow the steps above for connecting to the server. Find the path and directory where the file to be downloaded is located. Select the destination of where the file(s) will go on your computer. The download process will show up after clicking ok.

Ending an FTP connection
When you are done with the FTP connection, ending the connection is done by just clicking the disconnect button on the tool bar
