Title:
Purpose of a Domain Name
Article:
A domain name is a unique identity used to identify you on the World Wide Web. It is unique because no two entities can ever own the same domain name at the same time. Many businesses miss out on the potential benefits that domain ownership can provide. It can act as a business card for your potential clients or be an advertisement for your services and products. They can visit your site and learn all about your business and gather any necessary contact information.

Domain name basics
A domain name is typically used to identify your web site on the World Wide Web. It is the address for your web site on a web server. Unfortunately, computers dont understand domain names like http://www.domainname.com. It only understands numbers in the form of an Internet Protocol address (IP address). In turn, for us as humans, it is difficult to remember numbers so we use domain names. Just as a note, it is possible for a web site to have an IP address without a domain name but it is not possible to have a domain name without an IP address. This is mainly because servers dont need the domain but they do need the IP address.

So how does the computer know what IP address is for what domain name? Glad you asked. When a domain name is entered into a web browser, it first goes to a Domain Name System (DNS). The DNS translates the domain name into an IP address then the appropriate site is sought out.

Creating a domain name
Basically, a domain name can be made of a single word or a string of words. It should be short and to the point. The domain name you choose should be relevant to your site. If it is a business it should be the name of your business. If it is a personal site then it should be a name related to the topic of your site. Be aware of the spelling of the domain name. Try not to include numbers as they can be represented as a word or as the numeral. So, for example, www.mybusiness1.com could be confused with www.mybusinessone.com.

Acquiring a domain name
Some web hosting providers today offer not only hosting options but include registering domain names as part of their hosting plan. This takes a lot of the work away from you and hands it over to the hosting company. The other way is to register the domain name yourself.

In order to do it yourself, you will need to find an ICANN accredited registrar. There are a slew of registrars today so finding one should be no problem. Also, because registering domain names is so competitive, yearly fees are becoming very low.

Reasons to keep registering a domain name
As mentioned in the beginning, a domain name is your unique identity. If you dont keep up with the registration, you will lose that identity and it will be available for others to own. Make sure to renew your registration at least a month before it expires so that you will be guaranteed to continue using it. If you do let it expire, then it becomes the property of the registrar and available to whoever is willing to pay the most for it.

Whether registering on your own or registering through a web host, it is a good idea to check that the registration information is accurate and up to date. You dont want to miss out on any important information that may pertain to your domain. Especially if it is about renewing your domain name.

Having a domain name is a great way to make your presence known world wide. For businesses, this is can be a crucial element to their companys identity in their respective markets. For individuals, it could be a chance to meet other people with similar interests and activities. Whatever the reason, domain names have given many people a way to become part of the online community.
