Root Access: You or Your Web Host?
Article:
If you are new to web hosting you may have heard of the term root access and wondered what does that mean. Basically, root access is the privilege and ability to access all parts of a computer. In web hosting, the computer would be the web server. Typically, the web administrator is the only one to have root access to the web server through a master account.

Web servers are set up with one root, the master account, and then the whole server is divided into different accounts based on whatever the web host provider determines. So if a web server has a total of 1000MB disk space and offers each account a total of 10MB then the web server would be able to accommodate 100 accounts. Each account acts independently of all the other accounts. So each account has its own privileges. Even though each account does not have access to the other accounts, the root, or master account, does have access to the entire server including each account. This is very useful when an upgrade or other service is necessary for the entire server. This saves the web administrator from having to access each account separately. The only caveat is that since the master account has root access, it is possible that any errors made could potentially wipe out the server.

Web hosting providers dont give out root access to anyone. Also, the only account that needs to have root access is the master account, which is managed by the web hosting provider. Unless you intend to lease or own your own server, there is typically no need to have root access. In any case, unless you know what you are doing, it is best to leave the management of the server up to the web host provider. This way, all you have to worry about is your own web site.
