There is no problem today finding a hosting plan to get your web site on the Web. There are even free web hosting providers that are springing into the market all the time. At the same time, there are just as many going out of business because they couldnt keep profits up. This frustrates their customers who must now find another hosting provider.
The truth is that free hosting is good for some but not for all. It is important to really understand what free web hosting is about and how it works before deciding to go that route. Some free providers are not even free at all. It is possible that an initial setup fee is required for account setup or transfer of domain or new domain setup or any number of other things they want to charge for.
Now most free hosting providers will have some sort of limit on what you are allowed to work with in terms of disk space and bandwidth and possibly and any other options. By doing this they can have some sort of upgrade program where for a small monthly fee you can have increased bandwidth, disc space, or whatever else you may want. This way they can make money as your web site gets bigger and more traffic is directed to it.
But what really is the driving force of free hosting is the advertising. It would be nice if free hosting providers were offering their services out of the kindness of their hearts but of course we dont live in fantasyland. Free hosting is still a business and as a business, they need to make money. So if they are not charging you for their hosting services they have to make money some how. That some how is through forced advertising. So when your web site is up and running, there will also be advertisements from different companies on your site and more than likely it will be for a company that you dont want to advertise for.
Because they cant rely on the conventional pay for service model, keeping costs to a minimum is a priority. That priority will more than likely be higher on their lists than, lets say, providing a reliable customer support service. It takes a good deal of resources to keep a web hosting service going. Free hosting may have to make certain sacrifices to keep the company going. One option may be to not keep up with current technology or limit services offered.
As stated earlier, free hosting is good for some but not for all. There are some risks to consider with free hosting but if you are shrewd and a bit web savvy than it may be the option for you.
