In any industry, there are bound to be market leaders. They have the financial resources to continue to spend millions of dollars to stay on top of their marketplace. It makes it very hard for the little guy to come in a get a piece of the pie. It can be challenging and there are methods to try and get a bigger slice of the pie but is it really worth it?

This is not to say that small web hosting providers should get out of the industry but to rethink their strategy. This is a very competitive market and this makes it very difficult to break in and become a giant of the industry. Instead of directly competing for the entire market why not target just a specific part of it. A Niche.

A niche is narrowing down the target audience that will be sought after. What that target audience is can be anything. They could be doctors, hospitals, plumbers, pet associations, or anything else. It should be something that is familiar to you and have some knowledge about. So if you love dogs maybe providing hosting plans to other dog owners and dog shows are the ways to go.

To often small businesses try to compete head on with the big boys and hope to pull off a David and Goliath scenario. Too often its the David that gets crushed. Instead of trying to dominate like the giants why not try a smaller and simpler approach that may be suited for the smaller budget and resources.
